Depression & MS

Despite steady rain and a gloomy chill, 83 enthusiastic and determined walkers turned out in Yorktown Heights, NY, on Sept. 15 to raise funds for research on MS. As Montel Williams offered rousing encouragement at the starting line, the sun came out for this First Annual Walk to Defeat MS in Westchester County’s FDR State Park. State Senator Vincent Leibell also appeared to offer his support for the first-time endeavor.

Participants sporting the Montel Williams MS Foundation’s signature blue t-shirts, emblazoned on the front with “Who Gives 100%?,” collectively raised more than $100,000 from individuals and corporations in their inaugural effort.

Leading the pack were Susan Walsh of Somers, NY, co-chair of the Walk, who raised $19,325. Walsh, who has lived with MS for 11 years, was the event’s top fundraiser. Her 6-year-old twin daughters and a number of their friends participated, wearing “Sue’s Girls” purple shirts. Amawalk resident Elyse Newsholme, who also lives with MS, came in second with $2,225; close behind were Carla Braca who raised $2,120, and walk co-chair Melanie McLaughlin, $1,925. The top corporate donor was Morgan Stanley Fund Services with $1,985.
Like all public funds raised through the Montel Williams MS Foundation, 100 percent of the Walk’s proceeds will be destined to top research scientists and institutions who are leading the search for causes and cures for multiple sclerosis.

“We are so encouraged by this terrific response to our first-ever walk to raise funds for MS, and are already looking forward to a bigger turnout and total next year,” said Co-Chairs Walsh and McLaughlin.
